Frederick Douglass, the great black abolitionist orator, proudly called himself a “Woman’s Rights Man.” An early encounter with suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton convinced him of the justice of woman’s right to vote, but was that his earliest conversion to the concept of woman’s equality? How did he live his belief in woman’s rights in other areas of his work? Leigh Fought, professor of history at Le Moyne College and author of the prize-winning Women in the World of Frederick Douglass, will trace the Douglass’s pursuit of women’s rights through his abolitionist career to his participation in Seneca Falls convention, his efforts to infuse the black convention movement with women’s rights, and his sponsorship of women activists’ work.
