Dry Dock Investigation on Button Property

The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum plans to continue the program of research and excavation now taking place on the Chittenango Landing I dry dock site toward fulfillment of the research goals described in the site research plan (Babson 2016) and research prospectus (Babson 2015).  The overall goal of this project is to recover archaeological information about the c. 1820-1855 dry dock site, and to develop the site and this information in concert with CLCBM's mission to educate the public about life and work on the Erie Canal in 19th-century America.

Summer of 2019, Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum (CLCBM) is reactivated a program of archaeological research planned for the Chittenango Landing I dry dock site in the northeastern part of the Museum's Button Property, at the junction of the original (Clinton's Ditch) Erie Canal and the Chittenango Canal. This program is proceeding under an existing easement governing archaeological and all other forms of excavation taking place on the Button Property, this easement being held by the Archaeological Conservancy (AC), who conveyed the Button Property to CLCBM in 2011 (see Babson 2016).In consideration of the AC's easement, these excavations are being undertaken in accordance with the guidelines conveyed to CLCBM by the AC in 2015 and 2016 (Archaeological Conservancy 2015a, 2015b), as this research plan (Babson 2015, 2016) was developed.
